Intorno a noi

What to see

Argentario is a unique place because of its singular geographical configuration and its natural and historical treasures.

If you leave the property from the main gate, you can walk up to the Panoramic Road (Strada Panoramica) and turn right. In a few hundred meters, you will find the entrance to the old village of Porto Ercole, with access to the harbor, and the ancient Spanish fortresses.

You can also take a drive along the Panoramic Road, where you will have a breathtaking view of the rocky coast, with its bays and promontories, all surmounted by ancient Spanish towers, and small beautiful beaches. Another road will take you to the summit of Mount Argentario, where you can visit the ancient Convent of Passionist Friars and, from the outlook, enjoy a unique view of the Orbetello lagoon and Tuscan Archipelago, and, on very clear days, even make out the mountains of Corsica! Finally, you can drive down to Porto Santo Stefano and watch the sunset.

The city and area around Orbetello deserve another visit. Nature lovers will be charmed by the lagoon, surrounded by two stretches of sand bordered by two beautiful beaches, Giannella and Feniglia, covered with pine trees. The latter is a nature reserve, where you can easily run into wild deer and several species of birds. At the beginning of the white road that runs through the tombolo, you will find a memorial tablet that marks the place where, in 1610, the painter Caravaggio allegedly died.

At the opposite end of Feniglia, you can visit Ansedonia, an ancient Etruscan settlement. If you go further, you will find the medieval village of Capalbio towering over the WWF wildlife sanctuary on the Lake of Burano, and the astonishing Tarot Garden, created by the French artist Niki de Saint-Phalle, which arbors 22 giant sculptures representing the tarot Major Arcana.

If you prefer to explore the area beyond Giannella, north-west of the Argentario, you can visit the medieval village and harbor of Talamone and the Uccellina nature reserve.

Argentario is the perfect starting point to sail to the islands of the Tuscan Arcipelago, especially if you rent a boat. The islands of Giglio and Giannutri can easily be reached by ferryboat from Porto Santo Stefano.

Although the coast is the main attraction of the region, the inner Maremma, heart of Etruscan civilization, harbors medieval towns such as Manciano, Sovana, Pitigliano, Sorano and Magliano, real artistic jewels.

And, to relax after all these excursions, you can immerse yourselves in the hot water of the Saturnia thermal spring.
